The Nicaragua Biogas Program (Programa de Biogás Nicaragua, PBN) was registered by CDM in 2012 and Gold Standard in 2013, with ProBiogas SCP as coordinating entity. The PBN is implemented by SNV Nicaragua, in partnership with HIVOS and funded by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) through the Multilateral Investment Fund (FOMIN), the Nordic Development Fund (NDF), SNV, HIVOS and local contributions.
By 2017 approximately 1,200 rural families, dairy and livestock SMEs have access to clean energy with biogas systems through PBN. However, due to the high transaction cost and low market prices of carbon credits Hivos could not afford to verify emission reductions from the biodigesters (the transaction cost would be higher than the revenue).
